La Befana's Night

And it was a long weird one for me. Couldn't sleep until after 3 AM only to have someone call the house at 7 AM (non emergency, OMG) and then my cousins were out here from 11-1. One lives not that far from here but the other was up from NC with his girlfriend.

It was actually a nice visit. Afterward that, it was warm enough to melt the ice and Mom and I escaped the hill. Managed to get to Macy's, picked up a last act shirt and blue jeans (all for under 34$ yay), some St. Germaine's liquor to add to my cocktail collection (am contemplating tossing the bottles all over the place back home, maybe the landlord will think it's such a mess because I drink too much) and then on to homegoods to get a new frying pan and whatever other trouble I could find (this time its name was pfeffernusse, and no I'm not sorry)

Almost blacked out at what the Chinese restaurant had jacked their prices too (we had an old menu)

I didn't get much writing done but I did finish the last of my planned [community profile] fandomtrees stories. Now to see if there is anything I can do in the many zero or 1 gift trees.

I got this from [personal profile] trobadora and [personal profile] sanguinity, the New Year's Book Prediction Meme

Grab the nearest book.
Turn to page 126
The 6th full sentence is your life in 2026.

I got 'I know he swaggers' from one of the two books and "The next thing I knew I was hit in the side by what felt like a streetcar.'

Hmmm I wouldn't mind meeting a swaggering man but we know which of these I'll get.

And it's music monday 30 weeks of music. This week's prompt is #8 a song from your first concert. I am ashamed to say I can't even remember which WAS my first concert. I think it was this. If not it was very close to being the first.

And finally i have the whole prompt list

Once upon a time, I started making a spreadsheet of plotbunnies. This was a terrible idea because it turns out that I really need plotbunny lists to be tangible. I need to be able to hold my plotbunnies and run my fingers over them and flip pages. This is not a dig at anybody who likes spreadsheets. My brain just likes things analog. So in 2023, I transferred the spreadsheet back into a notebook, awkwardly.

Since I have transcribed the proper 2020 plotbunny notebook into the new 2026 plotbunny notebook, I need to figure out what to do with the 2023 book. It is not complete but definitely has both duplicates and stuff not listed elsewhere. Hunting duplicates is possibly too time-consuming, but we'll see. I may just ignore it for the most part, or just pick a page at a time and go slowly?

Digging through my journal to find a bit more info on the spreadsheet mostly got me entries about getting rid of the spreadsheet, and those entries also were full of general malaise about posting to AO3. So I suppose it was no actual surprise that when, a few months later, the deep malice, bigotry, and incompetence of the OTW exploded, it was easy to just walk away.

No archiving today. Too tired from post-break work + getting back on schedule. Might not get back around to things until Thurs/Fri but that's fine.

(My 'favorite' attempt at organizing some plotbunnies/prompts was back in... 2016 or so? Definitely when I was in school and very busy. Anyway, I was lovingly attaching notes and whatnot into a composition book, and decorating them, and then suddenly realized that no, I'd not written a lick of any of them. But I'd certainly scrapbooked them nicely.

No regrets, looking back! That was the creativity I had at the moment.)

Word for the Year

Jan. 4th, 2026 10:07 pm
cmk418: (Arya)
[personal profile] cmk418
Every year on the first Sunday in January, my church gives out "Spark Words" to all the people in attendance at service (either in person or on-line). The words are chosen at random and you're asked to use it as a sort of touchstone during the course of the year. In the past, my words were "Trust" (which I nearly threw back in because that's a hard one for me) and "Sunrise" (which I still am not sure what I was supposed to do with that)- there were a couple of others as well, but I don't remember what they were.

This year the word I chose was "Vitality." Merriam-Webster defines it as "lively and animated character" and "power of enduring". Some synonyms are vigorousness, vibrancy, exuberance, liveliness, cheerfulness, and enthusiasm.

So I guess the plan is not to sleepwalk through the next year, but to be enthusiastic in my actions. There might be days when this is as difficult as "trust.

If you had to pick a word, not at random, what would your word be for the year?

Until next time.
With exuberance,
C-

[personal profile] trobadora is hosting write every day this month and posed a question to which several of us answered yes we remember to write every day and then asked how do we remember? Last night I had no real answer to that. I'm not sure I do today either.

Once upon a time Deepka Chopra was offering 21 day meditations for free with the idea that psychologists say if you do anything for 21 days it becomes a habit. I'm not sure where he read/invented that. I can tell you it didn't make me keep up my meditation once the 21 days were over for the most part so it might be hokum.

But the truth is I don't remember setting out to write every day but I have done so for so long HOW I managed to make it a habit is lost in my Dorrie the fish memory. I will say I'm NOT a believer in you MUST write every day but it certainly helps to have SOME kind of writing practice. I do know waiting for the mood or your muse isn't really going to get you anywhere.

But for some every day is too much pressure and not necessarily helpful. Some of us have difficult jobs, maybe more than one, we have partners, we have kids, we have chronic illness. Hell I'm always shocked by the people who can write with young kids. We need to be kind to ourselves or we risk damaging our creative self. Some of us can't work if we're anxious. Others (me!) write and write to make the anxiety calm.

And that's my biggest piece of advice for establishing a writing habit. Find what suits you. Some of you will be morning writers ew as far as working for me. I had one friend who was converted by that how to write book back in the later 80s early 90s that talked about morning papers and insisted that was the ONLY way to do it. Nope, there is no ONLY way. Some of you will need a dedicated quiet space. Others can write anywhere. Some might need to go out somewhere else because all the stuff at home is distracting.

Find what works for you and do that. And then do it again. Do it as often as you're comfortable with. If it helps you, set a deadline (which is one of the reasons I write every day. I'm very often on a very real deadline). Have a friend set a deadline for you if that helps. Basically you do you and keep on doing it. You may falter but that's okay. Dust yourself off and go for it again.

Fic in a Box and Yuletide thoughts

Separating this out from the story post so I can maybe lock it (or delete it) later.

This was my second year participating in Fic in a Box, and I'll start with the good: I really like the stories I wrote and had a lot of fun crafting them in response to my recipient's requests. But unfortunately, other than that, I don't think this exchange is a good fit for me. It's nothing against this exchange, there's just a mismatch between my fandoms and my preferred gift formats and what other folks who participate are able to offer. I may watch for pinch hits for this one in the future, but I'm really not sure I'll continue to sign up. I do like the high word count minimum and the flexibility to split it up across multiple stories, but the experience of being an extremely-lingering pinch hit really was not something I enjoyed.

Yuletide continues to be a great match for me, however! This year I had a lot of fun crafting a (much longer than I expected) adventure story based on one of my recipient's prompts that just got stuck in my brain. And it got lots of comments over the course of the exchange, at least compared to what I'm used to getting. Plus I received a lovely story in a very tiny fandom, where I am one of only a handful of fan authors, and that was a really delightful gift to receive. All around, very happy with the experience.

Archiving! Fandoms added: Kingdom Hearts 2, Count of Monte Cristo, Dragalia Lost, Wild Rock... ten fics total. Still debating slimming down [community profile] lemonadecafe's index and just using tags, idk. The index is going to get ridiculous sooner than later at this point so I guess we'll see?

The Count of Monte Cristo (2002 Movie) fic is one of the last exchange fics I wrote and apparently from a time before I'd turned off a lot of formatting in LibreOffice. I thought I could copy the raw html from AO3 but that turned out Very Badly. I've fixed what I could but AO3 is literally cleaning things too well and it's almost impossible to pick out what's gone wrong without multiple programs and argh... I suppose this is a chance to 'fix' the version on AO3? (I do actually fix code/typos/etc. over there when I see them. I try to say I don't post to AO3 because I am technically still using the site, unfortunately.)

Working on getting 2020's ow plotbunny book transcribed to a new notebook. There's a 202x appendix somewhere, and a lot of notecards, but there was literally a point where I just stopped logging things? Which is Not Great and kinda shows how my mental health went arse for a bit. (Also 2022, I'm guessing.) Well, fixing that now! This should all be Very Interesting!

Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom

Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

I've had many cats over the years. We lost our two old boy cats in mid-2024 and early 2025, both very nearly making it to seventeen years old. That left us with our two girl cats, plus the dog - more about him in a moment - and the house just felt wrong and too empty. So last July we got a new boy kitten, who is gorgeous and confident and full of mischief. I'll start with him:
