I'm getting to do absolutely nothing. Was going out tonight with my brother and SiL. Now they're sick. Monday is going to be a good day travel wise but everything is closed. Sigh.

I really got nothing done today beyond packing away Christmas and working up one set of notes.

Today was weird. My sugar was in the 80s all morning and even after a pasta dinner it's only 116. Who knows with me

This year at Christmas, we had a gift exchange. We gave different options for gifts and I had mentioned that I would like either a picture of the moon or the Gateway Arch (or both) or a painting experience. My sister-in-law drew my name and tonight we went to one of those paint-and-sip places and had a lovely time, despite quite a few happy accidents happening.

Snowflake Challenge 2026 - Day 1

Challenge #1

The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

Hi, I'm [personal profile] luthien. I'm 50-something and Australian. I found fandom in 1998 and have been writing fic since 1999. While I've had quite a few fandoms in the past, I don't have any really active fandoms atm. But I've just done yuletide for the - counts - 12th time, so I'm still here and I'm still writing.

I've done the snowflake challenge quite a few times now. I find it's a really good way to plug myself back into fandom at what's otherwise a fairly quiet time of the year, particularly when there's no specific fandom making me engage on a regular basis. It's nice to stop and think about fandom and fannishness, to communicate, and to meet some interesting new people. It's also nice to be more active on DW. I miss the days when fandom was more conversation-driven, and snowflake tends to be a good entryway into all sorts of sometimes unexpected conversations.

Shows I've been watching over the past year include: Stranger Things (like everyone else I know), Pluribus (one of the best shows I've seen all year), the Gilded Age (which has beautiful costumes, Carrie Coon chewing up the scenery with gusto, and an absolutely fascinating look into the Black elite in 1880s New York as well as thinly disguised portrayals of the Vanderbilt family), Slow Horses (if you're not watching it, you should be), Severance (ditto) and I've yet to start on Heated Rivalry - a friend will be coming after me with a pitchfork if I don't start it very soon, though.

I like fine teas, especially Taiwan oolongs, interesting perfumes, especially Serge Lutens, and cats, of which I have three. Oh, and a very spoilt shetland sheepdog.

One Battle After Another

My first Fannish 50 post is about a film that I watched tonight, "One Battle After Another". It's written directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and inspired by the book "Vineland" by Thomas Pynchon. The film features wonderful performances by Leonardo DiCaprio, Benecio del Toro, Sean Penn, Regina Hall, and newcomer Chase Infiniti.

The book that the movie is sort of based on was written in 1990, but it felt eerily true to America in 2025. The fact that the film opens on an immigration detention center and that our protagonists are people actively working to help free the immigrants from the detention center and wage war for a number of social causes make them very easy to root for. Could they have chosen non-violence? Sure, but that might not have made for an interesting movie and as the catalyst character expresses, those other methods wouldn't have been as effective. There's also a shadow group of Christmas-themed (I don't know why) white supremacists that come in about a third of the way through the film and are mostly there to throw a wrench into things for the chief antagonist.

Like most of Anderson's films, the drama is balanced with a fair amount of comedy. DiCaprio's frustration when he's too high to remember all of the codespeak is a very funny moment. Benecio del Toro's character brings a lightness to the script in a buddy role. There are also absurd moments like the very visibly pregnant woman firing a machine gun and the whole "Hark the Herald Angels" song before a meeting with the white supremacists.

It's a fun movie, tense at points, but ends with what I think is a note of hopefulness for those of us in need of a little revolution.

Isn't this a great cover? It'll be out on the 23rd. My story is a sapphic one, set in the Hocking Hills of Ohio (yes again) and we do love our cryptids in Ohio. If you're interested you can preorder it
here.

All I did today was be stuck atop an icy hill and help Mom take down Christmas. This is a multi day process. I have decided next Christmas I DO need to come home asap because I never get to any of the things I want to do after the holiday. I had at least a half dozen holiday things I wanted to do and I'll be lucky to do one. sigh.

I did finish another [community profile] fandomtrees today and posted it. WHEE! There are still plenty of empty or low trees if you want to check out the list and see if there's anything you might like to write.

I was supposed to join my brother and SiL for dinner. Couldn't get off the hill.

Yuletide Reveals 2025

[personal profile] thisbluespirit
[community profile] yuletide is now over for another year! I did, in fact, have the misfortune to turn up at the exact wrong moment to catch the reveals bug on the 24th, so I saw the identity of my gift-writer, although as they were someone that I only had the vaguest idea of having seen the name around AO3 somewhere before, it didn't really spoil anything, thankfully.

I had hoped to do some little treats, as I got on and got my fic done as soon as I could, but I moved instead. However, as I cut out one section from my assignment and posted it separately in Madness, I did technically still post a treat as well!

I wrote The Winslow Boy for [personal profile] edwardianspinsteraunt, so I was not super anonymous really, for anyone who actually looked that far, but I had a lovely time spending a month or so rewatching the film and coming up with different scenarios from their prompts and my head for a 5 + 1 Times fic. By the end, I decided, though, that the "+1" just increasingly didn't sit right with the rest, so I split it off, hence the Madness treat.

Summary: Five ways Catherine and Sir Robert might have met again, after the trial.

Some writerly blathering )

I wanted to include the Winslows lose the case AU if I could, as I knew [personal profile] edwardianspinsteraunt was keen on that idea - and as I thought would it might rather put paid to any Catherine/Robert, at least for quite some time, it fitted well into the format as the "one time they didn't" (meet again) (although never at any point was that categorical). It did work out well and was maybe the most Rattigan section in the end, I thought, so I had to post it even after I cut it. (Although had I realised sooner I was going to set it loose alone, I'd have found a way to make the start a little less in media res, although tbf, it's an unlikely one to appeal to anyone who doesn't know canon).

Anyway, here it is:

Yuletide Reveal

Jan. 2nd, 2026 09:49 pm
luthien: (Xmas: Yuletide)
[personal profile] luthien
This year I wrote a Georgette Heyer novel fandom - again. I seem to manage to get assigned Heyer approximately every second year, but since I never nominate any fandom once I've written it once, this was, again, a Heyer I'd never written fic for before.

Perspectives (14548 words) by Luthien
Chapters: 8/8
Fandom: The Nonesuch - Georgette Heyer, HEYER Georgette - Works
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Sir Waldo Hawkridge/Ancilla Trent
Characters: Ancilla Trent, Waldo Hawkridge, Tiffany Wield, Laurence Calver, Courtenay Underhill, Maria Docklow, Mrs Underhill, Mrs Burford, Julian Lord Lindeth, Lady Hawkridge, Reverend William Trent, Mrs Trent
Additional Tags: Regency, Historical, Post-Canon, POV Outsider, Kisses, Secrets, Spoilt Brats, Governesses, engagements, Weddings, Honeymoons, minor original characters, Inns, Bad Weather, country house parties, The Season, POV Multiple
Summary: What one sees, and how much, depends very much on one's perspective.

~*~

This time, the Heyer novel was The Nonesuch, which was the very last of Heyer's Regencies that I first read as a teenager, so it's always stuck in my mind for that reason. It took me several years to find a copy of it, back in the days before the worldwide web, when the local library, and a couple of local bookshops and secondhand bookstores, were my only sources for books.

I've always mostly preferred Heyer's novels with the more mature main characters than the ones with the ingenue heroines (with the exception of Hero in Friday's Child - because she's impossible not to love), so Waldo and Ancilla (despite their names *g*) have always worked well for me. I really enjoyed exploring them and their vibe through the perspectives of a bunch of different characters in this story. And of course The Nonesuch also features, in Tiffany Wield, one of the most gloriously terrible spoilt brats that I've ever encountered in fiction. I had particular fun with her perspective, and I think I managed to do her justice. My recipient liked it, anyway, and that's really all that matters in an exchange like this.

Roll on, next year.

The Friday Five for 2 January 2026

My answers to today's questions at thefridayfive@DW

1. Do you mostly drink tap, filtered, or bottled water?

Only tap water.

2. Is it safe/recommended to drink tap water where you live? If not, why?

It's safe. The quality of tap water here in such that it's a given - nobody born here even thinks about it.

3. What does the tap water taste/smell like where you live?

Nothing, IMO.

4. Do you collect rainwater? If so, what do you use it for?

Nope.

5. Do you/have you ever had restrictions on water use where you live? What did you have to change about your lifestyle?

The only times tap water isn't safe to drink is when there is a temporary, local problem with some local plumbing/water supply/water treatment plant. These happen occasionally but I've never had it happen to me in my 51 years.

People still have summer cottages that are old and basic enough that they don't get municipal running water, or the running water comes from their own well in which case bottled water is needed for drinking. My Mom and her SO had a place like that for a couple of years, spent only summers there and had to haul in water for the stays. They had their own well and running water, but it could not be used for drinking or cooking, just for showering and gardening and such.

The only thing was that when I visited that Mom's and SO's summer place, I had to remember never to drink water from any faucet. And while showering, not letting water in my mouth.

A New Year

[personal profile] cornerofmadness

I'll be honest. I hold out very little hope for this year being better than last year. I did the Meriam Webster's thing on bluesky, you screenshot their gif and whatever word you get sets the tone for your year. I got moribund. Are you fucking kidding me? Why is that even a choice? Is it literally just spitting out every word in the dictionary.

But moribund feels right for the 2020s which if I'm continuing to be honest sucked donkey dong. 2020 - covid 2021- nearly lost my leg and took a year to learn to walk again 2022-23 weren't as horrid 24 - lost my uncle 25 - lost my last uncle. So while I'm hoping moribund is NOT my word of the year, it feels right.

Right about now is when I do my good things jar (okay usually it's next week when I get back to Ohio but I know what's in it) it has three things, presented my sabbatical research (at work and at my conference), got a story into an anthology (i'll give you that info tomorrow) and I went to an all inclusive resort for the first time in Mexico. Pretty slim pickings for good things. Mostly 2025 was me trying to not lose my sanity.

So resolutions? Eh, I don't really make them. I've given my writing goals. In addition to that I'd like to see if I can come up with lunches that don't spike my blood sugar, I'd like to get more active but what I need more than anything, a cleaning schedule for my home because this cannot go on as is.

I'm still thinking about doing [community profile] snowflake_challenge. I got really sideways with this challenge a couple years ago and lost my taste for it. But a lot of my list is doing it...sigh

But here, let me share some cool things about me and my writing

one of the first of probably several archive things I'll end up doing. Got this one from [personal profile] lucy_roman
from AO3

Total works on archive - 894

Works written in 2025 - 74

Longest fic written in 2025 The Porn Star Murders Hazbin Hotel

Fic with most bookmarks (also most hits and kudos)Hope is The Thing With Feathers The Owl House

Shortest fic - Needs Unmet Helluva Boss

And here are my writing stats. I have no complaints here: Original fic count 38,727
Fanfic count 359, 707 for a writing total of 398, 434. My only complaint is I wanted 50K of original fic. sigh.

Thanks to a few of the things on [personal profile] sholio's post today I have some community recs

[personal profile] candyheartsex a multifandom gift exchange with a low minimum and a focus on relationships, both platonic and romantic/sexual

[community profile] traumaticexperiences a (psychological) trauma themed multifandom exchange that will be run on Ao3. Matching will be done on fandom, relationship/solo character, and freeform. You must be 18+ to participate and maintain anonymity until creator reveals.

And one I'm actually in is [community profile] allbingo and I'm hosting, the public domain fest bingo. come join us.

And for anyone still on LJ and haven't backed up your old blog somewhere else the news is looking bleak. I haven't fully read up on it. I do crosspost there for the few friends who haven't joined me here on DW but it looks like Russia isn't playing games with it any more. You can check out more here on bluesky. and a bit more here on DW about the importing.

Good evening and Happy New Year! One of the things I want to do this year is post daily. Today, I'm in the midst of the annual deep clean and purge in the bedroom. I have not gotten very far, but I had done a significant amount earlier in the year, so it may just be that I've gotten some of it out of the way.

Anyway, this morning I got a Facebook video directed to me by [personal profile] kerk_hiraeth which was about "Heated Rivalry" and that some men thought it was a Sapphic romance and went into this whole thing about men being afraid to show emotion, so anything that did had to be feminine and that HR is definitely not a Sapphic romance. (Until I write the fanfic where Rose & Svetlana hook up but that's neither here nor there.) But during the video which is from NYE, the vidder said that they were in the midst of doing their New Year's cleaning.

So, question for all of you, do you immerse yourself in cleaning projects either on December 31 or January 1?

[community profile] snowflake_challenge is live! Day 1 prompt is: "The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it."

Uh. I haven't really done an intro post in so long. I'm JT -- justiceturtle on Discord and YouTube, maryellencarter on Tumblr, thedarlingone here and AO3. I write fanfic with my life partner and co-author Leia, camshaft22 on AO3 and Tumblr, the-dour-one here (we decided to coordinate the usernames and then failed to coordinate the hyphenation).

We mostly write in the Star Wars Legends X-wing fandom, more briefly described as Rebel pilotfic; we're currently posting a longfic (171k, finished, updates Sundays and Thursdays) fusing the sequel trilogy with elements from the X-wing books. Our backlog also features several longfics from Lupin III fandom, but I had a very bad time with the people there and have no plans to go back. I've also been streaming a wide assortment of video games semi-irregularly on YouTube.

As far what I'm hoping to get from doing the challenge, mostly just trying to get in the habit of posting here. I've been linking my streams but not really posting otherwise much, since I don't feel like I often have much to say. I probably won't be linking my posts on the Snowflake Challenge comm, just because I don't especially feel like it? Happy to hear from any of y'all though.
