So YSST kicked off this week and I must say I was pleasantly surprised! Not that the episode was good -- all signs pointed to this project looking pretty damn good -- but that it actually left me excited to see what the fuck is happening. Also that it raises Many Questions[tm] if you've been around the block for decades but kicks off in such a way that watching it without having seen YST is fine, which is good.

Nasti being right there is also Good and lol props to Sunrise for keeping her under wraps right up until just as (after?) the first episode aired, lolololol --

Hopefully it can keep up as it began. It's absolutely seriously not taking itself seriously, except when it does, which is everything I could ask for in a start.

one growing suspicion I had over the promo months panned out (and how!), I wonder about the bigger red-string-and-pins suspicion even more now ...

Meanwhile in a continued Series Of Sure Coincidences Lolsobwhat, I decided to shell out and get me an omg.lol account the same day Denise started screeching about LJ's imminent demise (and not not~ long after Denise annoyed the fuck out of me wrt Dreamwidth, last month); now the day I activated my account on omg.lol's irc server, Discord is preparing to go public and is filing for a public offering.

Well, a major reason I was interested in omg.lol specifically was its irc (and other similar things), so time to dig around even more and prepare I suppose --

Whether waiting for Neatnik to finish its webhosting plans to go along with omg.lol or finally getting around to Neocities or Nekoweb or something, I need to get on with that. Maybe I can even pull it off before the year is over? Maybe?

I'm gonna take the YSST win, though. Yep.

Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom
Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

I don't have any pets of my own. Dogs are cute, but ever since I was a kid, I was more into cats. However, my parents didn't want a pet and to be honest, I'm self aware enough to know that I wouldn't be able to take care of one. The first apartment we lived in when we moved to California was nice in the sense that there were other people with pets my sister and I could play with. Our upstairs neighbor had four cats and two dogs! They were all very sweet.

My favorite fictional pet is definitely Salem from Sabrina The Teenage Witch. That sarcastic cat was really funny and definitely one of the best parts of the show. I also have a soft spot for Luna from Sailor Moon. I watched Homeward Bound way too many times and I love all three of them but Sassy was the best.

And of course, Shelby from Smallville (see icon). That dog was adorable and I was always happy when they let him pop in. He literally saved Clark's life! And he had good taste, because he liked Lois right away, even when Lois was ... apprehensive. My sister still calls him "Clarkie" though!

As far as my current fandom goes, I'm not trying to fall into stereotypes but I do stand by the belief that they should let Buck get a dog (so close in s8!) and Eddie get a cat. It would be adorable. :)

Can something be "Fannish 50" if you aren't a fan of it?

I wanted to see "Ella McKay" for a while because it was written & directed by James L Brooks, who wrote & directed one of my favorite films "Broadcast News".

This was not that. Not even close. It was billed as a comedy, but it wasn't all that funny. The one character that brought the humor- Ella's brother- was the bright spot of the film and his subplot was ok.

The film used a narrator- Julie Kavner (aka Marge Simpson)- and that was the first sign of trouble because the narrator kept telling us how we were supposed to feel about various things (and also how great Ella was.)

Ella was actually great as a politician (also pretty unrealistic as she actually wanted people in government to do something other than trying to get re-elected again.) and I wished they'd focused on that aspect of her life more than having all the nonsense with her awful dad and her equally awful husband. It just felt that Brooks tried to heap the misery on her by giving her a womanizing father, a weak mother who stayed with the man, a distant brother, a husband- her high school sweetheart- that she only married because he seemed to have a functional family. The best person in her life was her aunt- Jamie Lee Curtis, who was used for some comedic effect, but on the whole, fell flat.

I will say that the aunt-niece relationship was nice to see, just because it hasn't been used in a lot of films, but it didn't save this one.

Give me more female characters like Jane Craig and fewer like Ella McCay.

Catching up, before I fall too far behind...

3. Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

I've posted about this before, but it's worth saying again: not to put too fine a point on it, but fandom saved me.

I found fandom in the late '90s, about a year before I hit a wall with the chronic illnesses I'd been grappling with for several years, and had to give up work. Going from being in an office every day to being at home by myself was a big shock, even though I wasn't well enough even to interact with other people much at the time. I'd also recently moved out of the city to the Mountains, and left all of my friends behind. I felt very isolated.

I had my cats to keep me company in body, but fandom was what kept me company in spirit. Fandom saved me. As I said, I wasn't up to interacting in person much, but I could interact a little bit at a time online. I remember spending days writing a single email - about a shared fannish love to someone who I'd only just met, but who is still one of my dearest friends 27 years later. I remember painstakingly writing fic, because it was the one thing I could do that showed me that my brain still worked now that I couldn't do my job any more. I remember getting into discussions about canons and characters and meta. I remember engaging - and suddenly I wasn't alone any more.

My health issues have gone up and down over the years, and so has the degree of my involvement in fandom, but neither has ever gone away completely. I still take part in yuletide and I still take part in snowflake, and I still talk to friends old and quite new who I never would have known existed if not for fandom.

Thank you, fandom. Just... thank you.

4. Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page
Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

My choice is Francis Grose's Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, 1811 (download from Project Gutenberg here - so it qualifies as a page ;)

Recently I've been writing a fic set during the English Regency (1811-20), and this updated edition of the original dictionary from 1785 is a go to for getting the flavour on the time, particularly when writing young male characters and their very specific slang. It includes many fascinating terms, including tiffing, meaning snacking between meals (and yeah, almost certainly a verb taken from tiffin, meaning the snack in question). And let's not forget the many and varied terms for penis, including: arbor vitae, plug tail, tickle tail, whore pipe, and, my personal favourite, gaying instrument.

I had two things shipping to my parents house. One that was supposed to be shipped back on the 30th but was telling me it should have arrived monday and one that should have shipped by the 3rd that wasn't supposed to arrive until tomorrow. Both arrived today. Woot. I bought my coveted raven dress from Svaha when they had everything 40% off and I had preordered the husk and angel figures in Loser Baby blue in the summer. Wow, Bandai really hit it out of the park with these two (especially compared to the stuff I got from Youtooz). Now to find a place to put them.

Made it back to Ohio (nearly forgot my apartment key!) half the crap is in the house, half is still in the car. It was a good drive. Rocket is between my feet on the recliner, happy as hell I'm back (mad as hell that I forgot to leave behind 1 can of food for him and only have kibble, he's mad as hell and I hear about it every time I move)

Given how iced over my freezer is, my power must have been out for a long time. Probably throwing all of that stuff out. sigh.

What I Just Finished Reading:

Keeping the Secret - Mostly the tales of the WAVS in Dayton OH in the ladies' own words

Murder Made Her Wicked - loved this historical mystery set in Wellesley

What I am Currently Reading:

The Witching Hour - by Heather Graham. how is this series so successful? This is not my first in the series (which I forgot when I requested this arc) this is not good.

Murder in the Ranks - Set in WWII with the WAACs in North Africa. Really different. I've read other WWII mysteries but never one with the lady in the war zone. I'm very much enjoying this one

What I Plan to Read Next: La Grand Familia and Zombie Day Care

Mom and I went to the casino to lose money and I did that well. Mom won. We also hit Primanti's and I got a second rubber ducky in my duck juice cocktail so yay for that.

I am not ready for work for reasons I don't want to get into publicly and has everything to do with the changes Ohio's Republicans have made with education.

So for my second fannish 50, have bunch of fandom related end of year memes

I only have a couple of physical books in my room right now and the closest one was the knitting pattern book that serves as my mousepad support, so the sentence in question is "Alternatively, work them in a row on a simple background as on design no. 155 (Blue and White Pots) on page 65."

Honestly, if my bad shoulder will un-jank enough that I can knit more in 2026, that's a pretty good omen.

I'm svgurl. I'm in my 30s, and have been actively part of fandom on and off since 2007, when I created my LJ. The SV part of my username stands for Smallville, which was my original fandom and I was very mono fandom for years.

My profile is up to date and gives a little background history and the fandoms/ships I'm interested in. I'm focused on 9-1-1/Buddie these days, but I still love MCU, Smallville, Gilmore Girls, and past favorites do come up from time to time.

I can be found on various places:

I mod:
[community profile] comment_bingo: a bingo challenge that promotes commenting on other fanworks using the provided prompts
[community profile] rarefemslashexchange: a rare f/f fandom exchange that runs once a year

This is my 5th year participating in the Snowflake Challenge and I really love the way it gives everyone a chance to interact with people that you normally wouldn't. I am not comfortable with just going to someone's journal and talk to them out of the blue, so it's nice that this gives you a chance to do just that. I am looking forward to doing more of that and meet more people on here as well! :)

And it was a long weird one for me. Couldn't sleep until after 3 AM only to have someone call the house at 7 AM (non emergency, OMG) and then my cousins were out here from 11-1. One lives not that far from here but the other was up from NC with his girlfriend.

It was actually a nice visit. Afterward that, it was warm enough to melt the ice and Mom and I escaped the hill. Managed to get to Macy's, picked up a last act shirt and blue jeans (all for under 34$ yay), some St. Germaine's liquor to add to my cocktail collection (am contemplating tossing the bottles all over the place back home, maybe the landlord will think it's such a mess because I drink too much) and then on to homegoods to get a new frying pan and whatever other trouble I could find (this time its name was pfeffernusse, and no I'm not sorry)

Almost blacked out at what the Chinese restaurant had jacked their prices too (we had an old menu)

I didn't get much writing done but I did finish the last of my planned [community profile] fandomtrees stories. Now to see if there is anything I can do in the many zero or 1 gift trees.

I got this from [personal profile] trobadora and [personal profile] sanguinity, the New Year's Book Prediction Meme

The 6th full sentence is your life in 2026.

I got 'I know he swaggers' from one of the two books and "The next thing I knew I was hit in the side by what felt like a streetcar.'

Hmmm I wouldn't mind meeting a swaggering man but we know which of these I'll get.

And it's music monday 30 weeks of music. This week's prompt is #8 a song from your first concert. I am ashamed to say I can't even remember which WAS my first concert. I think it was this. If not it was very close to being the first.
