Round 39, Hour 18

Last hour, we had people almost ready to start something!  Presumably not an intergalactic war that would kill trillions and potentially threaten the very fabric of space and time.  Has anyone started anything else yet?

Some numbers taste salty, others are just dry. Some have very subtle nuances, and you can crunch them for hours without hurting your teeth.

Statistics about gender discrepancies in pretty much any field are hard on the digestion, though.

IIRC, the Newberys have been one of those awards which, historically, a woman only won if there weren't any men to give it to. After all, the award was being presented by men, even if it was a field with an annoying number of women in it. The only consolation is to look at the rate of change in recent years, and the change in the rate of change, and remember that this is one of the many signs of improvement.

In RL, I am actually the Spreadsheet Queen. I eat numbers for breakfast. I like to sprinkle them on my toast. *g*

I devour words as well, although in a somewhat different fashion. *bows*

Actually, during the entirety of the 1930s, no man won the Newbery Medal and only ten were even nominated - against 53 women. (After which some !@#$%^&* whose YA fiction I love dearly, but who REALLY needed to sit down and shut up in this context, made a speech at an ALA conference saying something like "there's too much sugary slipshod feminine thinking in kidlit" and the stats jump visibly backward. o_O)
