At this point I have it pretty well figured but I do wonder if it is possible to ignite magnesium in any sort of larger chunk or does it have to be in shavings/powdered first? Also, would some hydrochloric acid in the ocean be a major bad thing for local sea life or would it just sort of make the seaweed wilt for a while?

I'm pretty sure magnesium has to be in shavings in order to ignite. It might be possible to ignite it in solid form, but it'd be pretty hard work.

As for hydrochloric acid in the ocean, I've no idea, except that it would obviously depend pretty heavily on the amounts and on how stagnant or not the water was.

If you've got the time to wait for your post to be reviewed and unscreened - which can be a few days - you might ask in little_details about the hydrochloric acid thing. Or you could poke round in their tags, which are incomplete but still pretty impressive. It's a really amazing resource. (I found it through lolmac's profile, actually...)
