If you feel comfortable IMing while she's near you, I can open up a AIM room or give you my gmail address so we can chat there. That way even if you have to shut the window down unexpectedly I can save what you've written.

Date: 2011-05-07 02:06 am (UTC)In fact, one clear difference would be Kirk's personality. I found the New Guy pretty much unrecognisable; he seemed to be a parody of a half-remembered story. For me, a story that actually portrayed Kirk and McCoy in a way close to the characters in the original series would clearly mark it.
There are also a lot of historical elements that got rewritten. If Spock's mother is alive, if Vulcan is intact, if Kirk had a less dysfunctionally retconned childhood, if McCoy comes across as older than Kirk and more grounded, you're cooking with the Original Recipe.

Date: 2011-05-07 02:21 am (UTC)The main problem I'm having is the criteria you've laid out is that I'm writing the story from Amanda's POV, while Spock is a child. So while I'm planning to have her run into the Kirk family. Most of the story will be about Amanda, Spock, Jim, and Winona and thus won't involve the crew or Kirk's grown-up personality. So most of the story would be happening before the major universe divergence happened.
In addition I don't feel comfortable referring to the characters by their last names, as was suggested for when I wrote TOS fic. Since most of the time you're not going to go around calling a toddler 'Kirk'. Last name or not.
