Because most made-up alien cultures seem to be boringly two-dimensional? Future!humans or AU!humans always seem to have a lot more depth, because we think we know basically what they're like even if everything around them is different, whereas with aliens the writer has to tell you EVERYTHING.
(OTOH, human-centricity has been way overdone, which is why the boys decided they want to be aliens in the first place. And having some of each tends to imply "okay, these are the ones you should identify with and these are the strange enigmatic ones". *eyeroll*)
