I hear you on the random commas; I was critting a story my mother wrote during the count-down to the weekend. I have a salt shaker full of commas and I'm not afraid to use it, but she's even worse.
Congratulations on re-acquainting yourself with what you'd written and adding more to it!
The usage of commas seems to be almost everyone's weak spot - I have to spend more time sort out commas than anything else when I'm beta-reading - no matter who the author is. And don't get me started on the proper punctuation of dialogue! *head:desk*
I am blessed that the writers for whom I edit or beta tend to have their Eagle Scount badges in punctuation. I mostly end up wrangling excess hyphens, which I save up for my boss' newsletter. (He never uses hyphens when he needs them. Thus is balance maintained.)
In fact, it's a truly nice thing that the one person whose spelling and punctuation is sub-par is the one who pays me to deal with it. How's that for sweet?
