There are some very good writers out there who prefer to jump into the middle of the action and then explain it as they go, actually. You could always try that.
Trust me, I do that when I can. Whenever I can. Sometimes it's just impossible.
(Specifically on the chapter 5 issue: I had to develop the characters in the 4 previous chapters for chapters 5-7 to make sense, otherwise it would have been out of character. It wasn't something I could jump in the middle of. But then chapters 2-4 went sort of okay, but chapter 1 bored the hell out of me. And I wrote the damn thing! But I just couldn't find a way around it. Who knows, maybe if I would have written it today, it would have been different...)
