Hiya! I just... sloped over to dw_britglish to try and find out whether "buck up" was the right way to tell someone in England (or Scotland) to be more cheerful. An hour and three blogs later, I'm no wiser about the phrase, but maybe a little wiser about the nature of research. XD

LOL research is always good.

Well, here in Scotland I can't say I've heard the phrase used much, but when it is, ususally it's when telling somebody to toughen up. More likely just to say 'cheer up'.

Oh, it is! :D In America the two seem a little more interchangeable, but I don't want the phrase to sound like a rebuke, so using 'cheer up' seems a safer bet here. Thank you!
