Date: 2013-10-26 12:06 am (UTC)I have two charity pieces to write - one with absolutely no prompt, one Shakespearean femme slash.
I also have to keep bashing through the ending of my big bad WIP.

Date: 2013-10-26 12:18 am (UTC)My jdficathon story is due Monday. Er, guess that should probably be my focus... I can remember how to do this, right? (I already requested an extension, just in case, though.)

Date: 2013-10-26 12:38 am (UTC)THAT IS AN AWESOME BIRTHDAY CAKE. Also, Happy Birthday! :D
(We had 45's when I was a kid. *twirls* Granted we also had cassette tapes and CDs and 33's and eventually MP3s, because my childhood was weird.)
I am going to be writing on YuleNaNo this 'rush -- first drafts of Yuletide treat stories, essentially. The fandoms are therefore Sekrit, so I refer to them publicly either very vaguely or by codes. The first story I'm going to draft is in the Not-Actually-Root-Vegetables fandom (it's complicated).

Date: 2013-10-26 01:45 am (UTC)So, as usual, I'm in over my head with projects. I've got WIPs I started posting, an Avengers fic and a Stargate Universe fic. Avengers fic has thirteen chapters done. SGU has one. Also, the epic, epic podfic that I'm so behind on editing needs some love. Or at least attention, because honestly? I'm not in love with it right now. But I owe it to a bidder from a charity auction so I've got to work on it. Also, I owe another story for the same auction.
So, I hope to finish the next chapter for SGU and do some podfic editing. I'm going to alternate working on the two fics I've started. Much research needs to be done, I'm reading Stargate Wikis like a desperate person.
Oh, right now, I'm getting ready to post chapter two of the Avengers fic, going over it once more since my beta finished with it.

Date: 2013-10-26 02:23 am (UTC)So. Does Carolyn Lam flirt, have a relationship with anybody? I know she gets paired up with Cameron Mitchell sometimes in fic, was there anything on the show to support that?
If there is an unscheduled incoming wormhole, can the SGC tell where the wormhole is originating from? Does the chevrons lock on incoming wormholes one at a time or do they all just light up. I watched a couple of episodes last night but since I as sick I was drifting in and out.
What was the reason Orlin came back as a child? Was it that a child's brain is more plastic in quality, more dendrites? He kept losing his knowledge and stopped being an Ancient and more like the child he appeared, I know. Did they expect him to die?
At the time SGU started, Carter is in command of the General Hammond, Jack is in charge of Homeworld Command. Is SG1 still going out of missions with Daniel, Teal'c Vala and Cam? Is Atlantis on Earth at this time, if so how much time earlier did they fly it back to Earth? How do the movies afterwards, The Arc of Truth, etc, figure into his timeline?
For that matter, I would love to find a timeline with all of this graphed out.
You're probably regretting this offer now, aren't you?
Laurie
no regrets!
Date: 2013-10-26 03:17 am (UTC)I can't help you with Atlantis at all; I've never been able to watch more than an odd episode or so. However, we just finished a full rewatch of SG-1, so the last two seasons and the movies are quite recent and fairly fresh.
Carolyn Lam, in the show, doesn't flirt with anyone, or have any visible life or personality, except for being a foil for Landry's personal subplot. I don't even remember her having any actual scenes with Cam.
The ongoing activities of SG-1, after Sam's promotion, are mostly open to speculation and fanon. I've seen fics in which the team carries on, with Daniel only taking an occasional pause to do training films (as seen in SGU); I've seen some where they scatter, with Mitchell also getting promoted and Teal'c going back to Jaffa Politic-land. It's usually assumed that Daniel continues to be the SGC's main archeologist, and there's plenty of in-canon support for him eventually hooking up with Vala, even without being stranded in temporal limbo.
The Ark of Truth basically just wraps up the Ori story arc; there's damned little character development in it. It's generally assumed to take place right after Unending -- as in, the next day or the next week, since the SGC hasn't had the chance to do anything with the Asgard technology. (In fact, you never do see them do anything with it, that I know of, not even in SGU.)
Continuum happens later, but we don't know how much later; and that's supposed to be the last of the Ba'als. My impression is that SGU doesn't start until some time after Continuum. By the time SGU kicks off, the Lucian Alliance are about the only Bad Guyz left, and they have to be leveled up in badassitude to keep from appearing excessively lame.
I'm going to post this comment now and put the next set of answers in a new comment.
Re: no regrets!
Date: 2013-10-26 04:09 am (UTC)So, the stuff about Carolyn was good to know. It's unblocked me.
The story I'm writing is SGU focused but there will be a lot of SG1 characters in it, maybe some from Atlantis, and will take place almost three years after the crew on Destiny go into the stasis pods, so I can muck about somewhat with what people are doing. I just don't want to come up with something if in canon people are doing something else in that time period.
God Bless the people who sit down and do transcripts and write the factual canon for the wikis. I kiss their feet.

Date: 2013-10-26 04:03 am (UTC)As you'll see in the comment thread, there's a lot of variation in what happens, based on whether the scene was being filmed in the studio or on location, and which series in the franchise is on the TV. Not much help, eh? It does mean that there's some leeway. However, I'm assuming that, like me, you want to use the events that were more or less consistent, so that you can both describe the experience and be aware of limitations.
One thing does seem to be entirely consistent: there's no way to tell the address of the incoming wormhole. Even when there's a DHD on the incoming end, it doesn't light up and show the symbols, and the Stargate doesn't show them either. There are multiple episodes in which, after a wormhole comes in, the SGC has to ask for the address, or otherwise acquire it, to be able to dial out to the same location. This also makes it easier for the secretive folks (such as the Tok'ra) to keep their home addresses hidden.
Orlin: came back as a child because, supposedly, in that form his brain would be able to retain more of the Ancient knowledge, for longer, since kids' brains have excess capacity and flexibility. He did revert to the mental status of a child, but with brain damage; he didn't die, but was institutionalized, and the implication was that he was going to remain a child, mentally. He clearly wouldn't have the mojo to ascend again, even if there were a chance he'd be permitted to; his lifespan might have been shortened.
Anything else?

Date: 2013-10-26 04:21 am (UTC)So, I'm getting tired, too, so I'm going to shorten this.
Yay Beth!
Great to know about the wormholes. I did a lot of reading and watching yesterday trying to figure that out.
I had the same idea about a kid's brain, based on what I vaguely know about neurology, but when I read the wiki I remembered about Orlin. I can use that in my story.
Does Homeworld command have a stargate? I'm guessing no, but I thought I should check. On Destiny, when the crew is trying to gate back, it sounded like they might be going to Homeworld Command, not SGC.
You don't need to respond to this tonight, get some rest. I appreciate your help.

Date: 2013-10-26 02:21 pm (UTC)So there would not be a second Stargate in DC as well as the one at the SGC in Colorado. Instead, Earth now has starships with Asgard beaming technology; someone can be beamed quickly up to an orbiting ship, then down to a different location. Storywise, you can use this device to get your characters from DC to the SGC quickly if you want to; if you want a delay, that's easy also. (No ship in orbit today, sry!)
I think the communication stones in SGU were kept at Homeworld Command in DC, while the Gate remained at the SGC and the SG teams continued to be based there.
