This is usually the quiet time when everyone is asleep, but this time we have two or three people still around writing. That's pretty cool. How's it going this hour?

This may or may not be my last post tonight.

Makin' progress! Doing some thought consolidation and found a neat pattern in my chapter break titles - now I need to track down a word with an appropriate meaning starting with 'R' to complete my set!

And, I'm good with doing the next two hourly posts. 'Tis 3 PM over here so I ain't a bit sleepy. ^_^

Who all's around this hour? Anything awesome to report? Anything sticking where it shouldn't? What do you need to get off your chest?

I'm here, being on the West Coast always makes me last in line for things... staring at my WIP so far, but I've managed to rearrange some plot points so they make more sense and added a short exchange of dialogue - it ain't much, but I'm writing.

Sounds good! Any progress at all is still progress. Keep on plugging!

Oh, and one piece of rather shallow poetry - I'm wondering if I might do better with things theoretically symbolic as my brain slowly begins to turn to mush the later it gets, I've a pile of unfinished poetry forms I wanted to try still stuffed in a binder.

Late night tends to be good for poetry, as you self-edit less. Some of the stuff ends up being garbage, but you'll sometimes get that one turn of phrase you wouldn't have thought of otherwise.
Good luck!

Poking at my chapter. Waiting to see if it bites. Considering researching one of the minor items I set aside tagged "look this up later".

I have decided it'll be more fun to sabotage fuse-initiated blasting caps rather than mess up an initiator box. Also, my sister rocks, because she came up with the methodology for either.

I'm on the Pacific Coast also; I expect to be around for at least another two or three hours.

*Nods* Background work is a necessary evil at points, as well as a well wished-for procrastination tool. ^_^
Luck to you in the next few hours, then!

Boy, isn't that true! Sometimes I've put more hours into research on some minor plot points than a person would ever guess from looking at the brevity of the scene - but I personally hate it when a writer is lazy about basic facts that can be looked up (of course if it's sci-fi you can have the bonus of resorting to technobabble and alien technology when needed, but it still needs *some* research).

'Tis all about suspension of disbelief; you could be the best writer in the world and still fail to draw in readers by dodgy research. Every part of the process needs to be done with equal care to get good results.
One of the reasons I've been blocked on my LoD fic before, methinks.

At its best, the research forms the heart of inspiration for me -- with MacGyver, I'm tied to the more-or-less real world, and I've voluntarily tied myself even tighter to reality than the show actually did. But the funny thing is that once I've got the research down, instead of finding it a limitation, it tells me what's possible, and everything just blooms out from that seed. It's really cool.

I think of it as an iceberg effect -- maybe 10% of what I've researched gets onto the page, at the most. But the page wouldn't look like that without the other 90% lurking under the surface. None of it is ever wasted.
