How's it going out there, oh mighty fic-rushers!?

Writing, researching, "researching", procrastinating, or just generally enjoying life?

A question, just because I can *evil laugh*.

Is there a genre or a type of story that you love to write, but you hesitate to do so for whatever reason?

For example, I really like kidfic, but I hesitate to write it because it feels kinda cliche when I'm writing it, even if objectively it isn't? I read quite a bit of kidfic, and I love it, but when it comes to writing I always have that moment of self-censure.

How about you all? Things that you like to write but you feel that you shouldn't?

Not so much a genre as a familial trait: It is an extraordinarily rare thing for my mother to write a story in which no-one dies. So I am conflicted, because I also tend toward writing things where someone or someones die or have died, and feeling all like, "seriously, again?!" about it.

But the story I am researching for will involve a murder, and since that was the impetus for the plot in the first place I see no way to remove it. There should also be some weird mysticism and so on that may mitigate things (Not Actually Dead for Magical Realism Reasons) but still.

I hope it will be. It turned out to want to be taken very seriously as a piece of writing. I have feelings about that. Mixed ones. And on that note, I'm going to go and re-outline the plot and do calculations about ages!

It turned out that music and popular culture, art history and history had a lot to do with what is happening with my character, so I have to adjust things to make her the right age at the right times. Argh!

I never know when people say "kidfic" anymore, are they talking about fic where the characters are kids or fic where they raise kids? I've been in fandoms where each one was the primary assumed definition.

As to genres I hesitate over - well, I'm trying to do a sort of post-apocalyptic urban fantasy right now and I'm dubious of my ability to do it well. I have trouble handling fictional magic: I love reading it when it's well-done, but my own brain is very, very rational, has to understand how everything works. So I wind up setting up all these really rigid rules and not leaving anything actually... magical. :P
