It's back! Even better, comments go through now without error messages. Those were very annoying.

I wonder WTF had been going on. Maybe LJ server maintenance on a Russian schedule?

I have no idea. I've never had that problem before, and never even heard of it happening before. Of course, I might not have even noticed if it hadn't happened in the middle of a fic_rush round during my mod shift. It was down for less than an hour, but it was an important hour!

Oh noes. I was getting a 500 Error on my flist, but it's gone now. I hope your lj access comes back to you!!!

I finally reached 1k for the day, so it's time for a dinner and tv break. Hoping for another 1k tonight after I rest my mind for a bit.

Hope everyone is doing well!!!

OMG this story I'm beta-reading. I can't. "Daniel can shape-shift into a black panther with golden orange eyes."

I hate writing rejection letters. :(

From: [identity profile] dbskyler.livejournal.com
Ergh. I confess that I do almost no beta reading, so I've never had to deal with that before. How do you handle that? Do you tell the writer you're not the best beta for them, or do you tell them honestly that their writing isn't very good?

Date: 2011-10-23 01:41 am (UTC)

From: [personal profile] lolmac
For me, it depends on what kind of relationship I have with the writer. If their writing is just plain bad, I try to avoid working with them at all. If I've been suckered in, I try to give them what encouragement I can along with the "this is a problem and you need to work on it" feedback, imagining an ideal world in which my instructions will actually be followed.

Usually, I get a stiff reply, along the lines of "I don't care about any of that, I just want to write and make myself happy." I don't reply to those comments; I just ignore the writer thereafter, and bitch about them to my partner, who reminds me that I promised not to get suckered again.

Every once in a while, I get a reply that thanks me sincerely for the feedback and says "I wondered about that, thank you, I knew it was a problem but didn't know what to do." Those people aren't the ones with Just Plain Bad writing; and they are the ones I often end up working with, repeatedly, for years.

They make up for a lot of the idiots.

Ah. Yes. I had this experience and ended up ditching the only person I ever said I'd beta for in direct terms. But oh, my. She really didn't want to hear what I had to say. So eventually not responding was self-defense.

On the other hand, I originally became friends with [personal profile] lothithil because I started proofing and editing her fic . . . which led to me actually writing. So some of the stories end up very happily indeed.

That was a happy ending for all of us. I've made a couple of good friends (of the distance/electronic/wouldn't it be great if we could get together for drinks? kind) on account of my tendency to leave really comprehensive feedback if I enjoy a writer. I can't complain about that at all!

It's hard, isn't it, because there isn't anything wrong at all with writing just for fun and to make oneself happy -- go for it! -- but if they've asked you to beta, then you have to either give your opinion, or tell them you can't be their beta. Or both, I suppose.

Exactly. When I've been approached for feedback, and then the feedback is rejected because it isn't fatuous praise . . . well, the writer had one chance, and blew it.

My own personal attitude is that there is, or should be, a problem with writing crap and being happy about it; for too many people, this means narcissism and stagnation. They'll never get any better in their blithe crapitude. But that doesn't give me any right to tell people that their work is crap. Unless they ask.

Even then, it's more useful to the universe if I tell them "You need to work on [aspect of writing], because [nature of why it isn't working]." If they ignore it, well, at least I didn't abuse them. And occasionally, the result is someone becoming a better writer. That's worth a lot of crap.

And I am now being prodded to go have dinner. Back later! Really, this time!

I'd been suckered in by 3 Mary Sues, so now I'm just going to be honest and give my reaction as a reader, not an editor.

Because If I have to struggle with my dislike of the content, to be exploited as the only person who'll read the story & give detailed feedback, then it's a waste of time for both parties.

Where did I leave off? Oh, yes, I was finishing up a Five Things -- 73 words did it. That's 588 words for the day and, um, 1638 for the rush thus far? I think?

I need to take better scribbles notes.

Okay, going to try some Aubreyad kinkmeme this time around.

I did it. Opened a document and made a couple of revisions. Now, on to writing a conclusion, I hope.

Opening a document is the most important part. The next most important part is reading your flist. LOL

Congratulations on revisions! Good luck on writing the conclusion.
