I'd set my timer for too soon, so when it went off and I saw the rice was nowhere near ready, I looked around for a useful thing I could do while staying upright in the kitchen, and now I have learned a couple things about papier-mache! namely:
• latex gloves are enough more tolerable a texture than the flour goop that I can actually get somewhere • tear the paper before putting the gloves on • fold and crease the paper once hamburger style and many times hot dog style before tearing it, in order to get narrower strips at a manageable length • using a glass bottle to mold the stuff works much better than freehanding it, assuming putting Vaseline on the glass first means I'll be able to get the things off later • not the jar that came with instant coffee in, though, that one is narrower in the middle than at either end • I won't hear the rice cooker beep politely even when I'm standing right next to it, listening for it and to nothing else
