so I have used a few different podcatchers and they don't always even agree with themselves on what file names should be given what file metadata is, and alphabetical sort with underscores is different from alphabetical sort with the spaces and punctuation the underscores replaced, and at least one had a max length for file names, and one defaulted to downloading in OGG format instead of MP3, and of course there's always using the file name the episode had when it was uploaded

and afaict not a single podcatcher I've ever used has been able to figure out I already have a downloaded copy of any episode with a different file name than it's trying to apply when trying to download all the episodes I haven't marked read already in that podcatcher

so I have two, three, four copies of a bunch of podcast episodes, some of which are in multiple folders bc the podcaster changed the podcast title or the folder name got truncated

so I am currently going through a folder sorted by file size, so that, ah, the 2018 file named like Podcast_Name_Episode_199_Recurring_Contributor.mp3 is the same file size to the kilobyte as the 2025 file named with the episode's topic and guest but not episode number, let me edit the episode number into the latter file name and delete the duplicate; this OGG file is a tidge smaller than this MP3 with an otherwise identical file name except it has underscores, trash it, but this OGG file might be my only copy of that episode, hang on to it; etc

(needless to say, my progress on room reorganization, fiber art, and other things I meant to do today is Not Much)

I understood maybe half of that but from the sound of it that's a blessing, rip, file organizing is a pain

tl;dr I have nearly a terabyte of downloaded podcast episodes and a bet on with myself about whether that'll be over or under three hundred gigabytes after I weed out all the duplicates
