*orders up a midnight buffet of writerly pasta, cookies, and musecakes*

Also herring.  For the penguins.  And in case we need to cut down any trees.  Alien herring, of course.

400 words gets you 400 herring! Hopefully that will be enough for your hungry, drunk, skateboarding ninja penguin. :D

I'm still not used to you being in my timezone. ;-)

*shuts browser window because James seems amenable to being written cuddling with Mort... we'll see!*

(For those who came in late: I'm writing an asexual male/male romance, 35 years long, in 50,000 words during May. Well, there's also a framing story of which this scene may actually be part - I keep writing scenes and THEN finding out where they go.)

I'm still waiting for the ninja penguins on skateboards to show up. Do you think they'll be tempted by the alien herring?

And happy midnight! How's tomorrow? It's still today over here . . .

They're ninja penguins. You just don't see them. They're there, all right. *nods sagely*

...okay, promptly got stuck because I haven't shared a bed since I was five years old. I'm trying to describe how you just know your sleeping partner's there even though you're not touching them and you were asleep when they got in bed, and they're not snoring. Is it the feel of the mattress with the extra displacement, the sound of their breathing, just a subconscious memory of feeling them get into bed or bump into you in the night?

*talking to self, mostly - I didn't even know Mort got in late last night till James rolled over, and I still don't know when last night was! Although I think today is a Saturday, in the fic I mean, but I don't know what Saturday...*

I think the main hints are mattress displacement and movement of the sheets as the second person gets into bed / pulls on them. Depending on how big the bed is, you might also be able to hear the other person breathing (even if not snoring).

Extra body heat?

That sounds like what I was looking for, I think! :D That and the mattress/sheet displacement... but I knew there was some sort of an "aura"-type thing that I just wasn't consciously remembering well enough to place. Thanks!
