When you enter a new fandom, especially large and old fandoms, do you catch up on the meta and fic history first before writing or just dive in?

that's not really an accurate representation of the chain of causality, though, like I won't write for anything I don't know canon well enough for, and how I find new canon is usually by reading reams of fanfic and meta
