Does anyone happen to know when it first became fashionable to dot i's with hearts? I'm like 95% sure it's sometime in the 20th century but I'm trying to figure out whether it's plausible in the 1960s.

Meanwhile, what obscure piece of knowledge do you have to share or need found?

Metafilter commenters think not before the 1970s because that's when schools stopped penalizing students for handwriting flourishes such as dotting i's with hearts; I would bet therefore that it's plausible in the '60s but neither fashionable nor common

fascinating; and that squares with what I found about 1970s kawaii culture and the switch in the States to D'Nealian, so I'm gonna go with '70s
