If I drink, it should make the magic of handwaving the details out of existence much easier.

Or I can revisit the entire premise of the scene, which I think I will have to do, in which case, yes, drinking.

My novella has an entire ending that just doesn't work so I guess this is small potatoes ;)

At least you know it's not working. I think the difference between good writers and bad writers is that bad writers don't know when something doesn't work (or don't care).

You're right, of course... I tell my friend who is rapidly turning into a professional photographer from a baseline of "Oh, my family isn't creative like that" all the time that learning what's good and what isn't, and then trusting your instincts is a huge part of the artist's journey.

Having the discipline to apply that to one's own work... ;)

I haven't been writing. I've been watching Deep Space 9 on YouTube (a friend recced me some episodes because I'd never seen it before). I think I still like TNG better, but it is interesting.

Part of the trouble is, I don't really want to write fanfic at the moment - I want to write orig!fic, and I'm not good at it. :-(

I like DS9. It's definitely different from TNG, which is one of the things I like about it. Do you know about ds9_rewatch? They're starting off tomorrow with the pilot. I was thinking of joining in myself.

Actually, the friend who recced me the eps is the founder of DS9_rewatch, eponymous_rose. She's been nattering about the show on her journal for a while, and because the last three shows she got me into were all made of unqualified awesome (Sapphire & Steel, Legend, and The Middleman), I decided I should finally give DS9 a chance while there's a bit of fandom activity on. So yeah... I know about it. ;-)

If you feel like writing original fic, you should go for it! What does it matter if you're any good at it yet? If you keep writing, you will get better. That's the amazing thing about writing.

Yeah... but like you said above, telling what's good and what isn't is a big part of getting better, and I stink at that. (I came within a mouseclick of permanently deleting One More Time - you know my story with Sarah Jane and Thirteen - before I decided to ask my flist first!)

I'm thinking I need a dreck!beta or writing buddy of some sort, but I don't quite know how to go about finding one...

A beta can be good for things like that. What if the next time you have something you would like someone to read over, you ask for volunteers on your journal? I've seen that work for other people. Also, asking "anyone interested in reading over this xxx word fic in y fandom" allows people to gauge their specific interest and time commitment, which I think works better than just generally asking for a beta.

All very true... I usually get stuck long before the point where I'd think of asking for a beta, but it's something to think about, anyway.

I fail at writing. I did, however, start reading Zombies vs Unicorns. :D
