Hullo! Dropping in today because omg Yuletide! Seriously, if I don't hammer out a draft of something this weekend, I'm going to have to face the prospect of defaulting. And that would be bad. :-(
So far, I have one sentence of my Yuletide fic written. Most of the past several hours have been devoted to writing 1500+ words sketching out an epic zombies vs vampires novel. Wtf brain!?
Shuffling words around and trying to make them more streamlined.
Question: Where do you suppose is a good place for Evelyn to have grown up? A town name or something. Does she have a London accent? She just sounds very posh to me, but does that mean she would have grown up on a country estate or could she still have lived on a generally unremarkable street in a town or suburb?
I'm such a geek my mind went straight to Everlyn out of The Mummy series, but on the probability it's not I would personally say the poshest English accent is the Oxford one, with preppy places like Henley also being a good option. You have to be from certain areas of London to sound posh. And I think it can also be up to upbringing, me and my friend both come from the same area but his parents are rich so he sounds posh while I'm a geek and often use long, obscure words, so people sometimes think I'm posh before they get to know me.
So yeah, if you want to be safe, high end London, Henley or Oxford, but given backstory you can make anywhere work.
(p.s I'm English so if you ever need more info, hit me up)
Ah, so close to an area I could talk hours about (I've only done the 8th Doctor ones). Is her accent really distinctive or does she just sound English? You could always try finding out where the actress that voices her is from, especially if she uses her natural voice.
Ha, yes, I am a big fan of the eighth audios as well.
I don't think Evelyn sounds all that distinctive. She's voiced by a woman named Maggie Stables. I can't find any background on her as she hasn't done much other than Big Finish. She sounds a little bit like Maggie Smith as Professor McGonnagal in the Harry Potter series? But also a bit like Colin Baker's accent. But that is my untrained ear.
Evelyn Smythe was born in 1945 and she starts traveling with the Sixth Doctor at age 55 in the year 2000. She's an academic: a historian who specialized in Tudor history. The prompt for the flash-fiction is "Celebration" and I realized she would have been about 8 years old at the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953. So I wanted to make a street party setting that would have been in her neighborhood growing up.
I'd say if she grew up to become a scholar then you could play fast and loose with her at age 8 because she could developed the poshness at uni, though I'd say have her come from money or have her as a very smart child as not many girls would have gotten higher education back then.
