Not only could I perfectly well break the impulse engine instead - and those are a lot easier to fix - that would make a lot more sense, because [secondary plot point I can't explain right now] is happening on takeoff. You don't engage warp on takeoff, that would be stupid! You're still too deep in the gravity well, for one thing.
